Our Story

The first Izzo’s Illegal Burrito restaurant officially opened its doors on July 23, 2001, at the south gates of Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, LA. However, the basic idea and menu for Izzo’s was born a long time ago in the Fernandez family kitchen. Co-founder, Ozzie Fernandez, grew up helping his mother Elda prepare traditional Mexican dishes from scratch that she learned from her mother in Mexico. Whether it was rolling out fresh flour tortillas, making salsas, or grilling fajitas, there was always something cooking in the Fernandez family kitchen. It was her passion for food and entertaining family and friends that led Ozzie to the culinary arts. Building upon these family recipes and passion for the industry, Ozzie and long-time friend and business partner, Gary Kovacs, combined several years of culinary talent and restaurant business expertise to create this unique fast-casual Mexican eatery.

Featuring the signature “Roll Your Own” concept, with exceptional food and a fun atmosphere, Izzo’s quickly drew long lines and raving fans. Capitalizing on the strength of a unique concept and a loyal fan following, Izzo’s soon began to expand into other markets. With more than 17 locations located throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, Izzo’s now plans its expansion throughout the southeastern U.S. and into the eastern seaboard.

Our concept was founded on a few basic principles, ones that we still uphold everyday: Serving only the highest quality food with generous portions, offering fast and friendly service, providing a great value in a fun and comfortable atmosphere, and actively giving back to our community.
